How Can I Survive a Hot Day in NYC?

Try These 10 Ways to Stay Cool!

Hover over the boxes below for the tips and tricks.

# 1

Portable Fans Are Worth It

Seriously. These little battery-powered or USB-chargeable fans are lifesavers, especially when you're waiting on a subway platform or standing in line for a bagel. Some clip onto your bag, others fit in your pocket. It may feel silly, until you're the only one with a breeze. Or, even a hand-held good ol fashioned accordion fan is better than nothing. Plus, then you can make that cool ‘thworp’ sound.

# 2

Keep a Reusable Water Bottle On You

An insulated bottle can keep your water cold for hours. NYC has public refill stations in parks, transit hubs, and even some cafés. Staying hydrated isn’t optional here, as dehydration creeps up fast in the heat and humidity.

# 3

Use Hotel Lobbies, Shops, and Cafés as Cooling Stations

Need a break? Step into a hotel lobby, browse a bookstore, or linger over an iced coffee in a local café. Even a few minutes of AC can make a huge difference. Bonus: NYC is full of beautifully designed interiors worth checking out anyway.

# 4

Walk on the Shadier Side of the Street (duh?)

It sounds obvious, but walking in the shade can drop the temp by 10–15 degrees depending on the day. In neighborhoods like the West Village, Nolita, and Brooklyn Heights, look for tree-lined blocks and north-facing sidewalks.

# 5

Visit Indoor Markets and Museums

Places like Chelsea Market, Essex Market, and the Museum of the Moving Image are perfect midday stops. They offer food, culture, and (most importantly) powerful air conditioning.

# 6

Opt for the Ferry

Subway platforms can feel like the inside of a volcano. If you're heading somewhere along the East River, take the NYC Ferry. It's breezy, scenic, and costs the same as a subway ride, but feels like a mini vacation.

# 7

Time Your Activities Around the Heat

Early mornings and evenings are your best bet for walking-heavy adventures. Use midday for longer meals, museum visits, or other indoor things. Opt for afternoon outdoor plans, once it’s cooled down slightly. Come on our bestselling Food Tour: Chelsea Market, High Line & Hudson Yards Food + History Tour from 4-7 PM. Over ⅔ is indoors in AC 😉

# 8

Dress For Success

Lightweight linen, loose cotton, breathable shoes, and a hat that actually shades your face. Consider opting for a bag that isn’t a backpack, to let your poor back breathe.

# 9

Treat Yourself

When in doubt, grab something icy. From gelato shops to gourmet popsicles, New York is full of frozen options. Mister Softee trucks are parked all over the city, and yes, there’s an app to help you find the closest one! If you’re on our Chelsea Market food tour, we stop for a passion fruit iced tea that’s cold, refreshing, and the perfect reset on a hot summer day. We sip it while we stroll along the high line to help you stay cool!
