Seriously. These little battery-powered or USB-chargeable fans are lifesavers, especially when you're waiting on a subway platform or standing in line for a bagel. Some clip onto your bag, others fit in your pocket. It may feel silly, until you're the only one with a breeze. Or, even a hand-held good ol fashioned accordion fan is better than nothing. Plus, then you can make that cool ‘thworp’ sound.

Keep a Reusable Water Bottle On You
An insulated bottle can keep your water cold for hours. NYC has public refill stations in parks, transit hubs, and even some cafés. Staying hydrated isn’t optional here, as dehydration creeps up fast in the heat and humidity.

Use Hotel Lobbies, Shops, and Cafés as Cooling Stations
Need a break? Step into a hotel lobby, browse a bookstore, or linger over an iced coffee in a local café. Even a few minutes of AC can make a huge difference. Bonus: NYC is full of beautifully designed interiors worth checking out anyway.

It sounds obvious, but walking in the shade can drop the temp by 10–15 degrees depending on the day. In neighborhoods like the West Village, Nolita, and Brooklyn Heights, look for tree-lined blocks and north-facing sidewalks.

Places like Chelsea Market, Essex Market, and the Museum of the Moving Image are perfect midday stops. They offer food, culture, and (most importantly) powerful air conditioning.

Subway platforms can feel like the inside of a volcano. If you're heading somewhere along the East River, take the NYC Ferry. It's breezy, scenic, and costs the same as a subway ride, but feels like a mini vacation.

Early mornings and evenings are your best bet for walking-heavy adventures. Use midday for longer meals, museum visits, or other indoor things.
